Amsterdam Afternoon
Amsterdam Afternoon
Arrival at Centraal — 16:20
Rolling into Amsterdam Centraal at 16:20, I stepped into a rush of cyclists, tram bells, and that crisp waterfront breeze. A quick pause to orient myself beneath the station’s soaring iron arches, then it was time to head for the hotel.
Tram to the Museum Quarter
I let Google Maps do the heavy lifting—live tram times from Centraal, platform numbers, and turn-by-turn walking directions between stops. With real-time ETAs and transfer alerts, I just followed the blue line along the canals. I’d saved an offline map too, so even when signal dipped, the route stayed on screen. This was my route for example: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WpQj9L9oP217AaEs8
Van Gogh Museum — Colour, Light, and Brushstrokes
With daylight lingering, I made a beeline for the Van Gogh Museum. Standing inches from the thick, swirling paint and electric yellows, you feel the work breathing— sketches, letters, and the evolution from earthy tones to luminous, high-voltage colour. The rooms move from early experiments to the iconic sunflowers and self-portraits, each canvas a window into pace, place, and state of mind.
Outside on Museumplein, skaters traced lazy arcs while the last light slid across the grass. I lingered a while, letting the noise of the city soften into the rustle of trees and tramlines.
